The Gift of Forgiveness

The Gift of Forgiveness
2013-12-22

Mt 1:18-23, Lk 1:30-35

Matthew 1:18-23
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
Luke 1:30-35
30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.

Everything that was to be known about Jesus the Christ was revealed before He was born. He will be "Great, set apart from all rest.
Jesus is not simply the revealer of God but God Himself revealed. Col 1:15 & 2:9, Heb 1:3
·      When Jesus took on the form of man His appearance changed but He did NOT set aside His deity but rather the voluntary use of His power as God.
Incarnation began with God’s earthly phase of reconciliation with man: Jesus Christ came to restore man’s broken relationship with God.
·      Like a gift freely received, Salvation is free to the receiver, but Jesus paid the highest price to obtain it …His very life.
o   Greatest gift anyone can ever receive is the forgiveness of sins from God thru Jesus Christ.
One of surest signs we have received gift of forgiveness is that we forgive others.
·      Forgiving means refusing to keep score & harboring no judgmental attitude. 1 Cor 13:4-7, Mt 7:1-5, Lk 6:37
·      We do NOT: acknowledging that what they did was OK.
    • Assume real offense, not unrealistic level of perfection from ordinary.
  • Do NOT: pretending you’re not hurt or it didn’t happen.
Forgiving is Christ-like & sets the forgiver free.
  • The unforgiver primarily gets hurt: emotionally stuck in a CAGE.
  • unforgiveness hinders our relationship with God & others. Mt 6:14-15
In movies, Christmas homecomings usually portrayed as happy times when everyone gets along, loves one another & celebrate in perfect harmony.
·      In Reality: many dread annual family gatherings: there may be unsettled conflicts, painful memories & uncomfortable relationships.
o   This produces an underlying tension that prevents them from fully enjoying the season.
God calls us to have a lifestyle of forgiving ALL people who offend us.
·      He commands us to forgive no matter what, who, when or where, & leave the justice to Him.
o   Through the help of the Holy Spirit we can forgive anyone of anything.
§  CORIE TEN BOOM story…Nazi guard.
But no greater example for forgiving those who hurt/offended us than Jesus Christ.
·      He never did anyone wrong (never sinned) yet was constantly, unjustly accused & mistreated by everyone...including you!
o   The violence you & I brought upon Jesus by our sin.  Passion of the Christ.
o   This does not diminish your pain and hurt but puts it into proper Biblical perspective.
Our debt to Jesus is far greater than others debt to us, yet He forgives us completely!
  • The Word says that understanding that truth will enable you to forgive others…no matter what they have done against you. Mt 18:21-35, Col 3:12-13
Forgiveness must be exercised to become a working, powerful muscle of love.
·      Forgiving little things makes it easier to forgive big ones.
  • Ask God for His help to forgive the person(s) you have in mind.
o   Focus on God’s forgiveness of you, pray for them.
·      A valuable & significant gift you can give anyone this Christmas is your forgiveness, because it will allow you both to grow.

The Truth Conquers the Lie

 I. Illustration: play Matrix clip"
A. When I first saw this movie I was struck by how powerfully it
illustrates some very important Gospel Truths. One of the main
ones is this: Everything’s NOT OK."
B. “There is something wrong with the world.” "
C. The world that we’re born into - what we know as the REAL world is a LIE. "
D. “It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth...that you are a slave...like everyone else you were born into bondage - born into a prison that you cannot smell or taste or touch. A prison for your mind.”"
II. The Lie"
A. Since the Fall of mankind in the garden the god of this world,
Satan, has worked tirelessly to construct a false narrative to
deceive humanity into believing this lie."
B. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:44, ESV)!
C. This effort of the Devil’s has been a huge success! Fallen humanity has willingly cooperated with this effort and has been enslaved by this deception ever since."
D. The Lie has become hard-coded into the DNA of this fallen world."
E. From birth we come into this world knowing and believing nothing
but some version of this lie: "
1.                   that the world is a happy, friendly place, "
2.                   that we people are noble and good, "
3.                   that God is the proud Father of us all and that he is very happy
with us"
4.                   and basically: THAT EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OK"
F. The Problem: Lies will out"
1. Our external circumstances and our internal intuition
consistently contradict this lie."
2. The pain and suffering and evil that we encounter in the world
keep nudging us telling us that something is wrong with this picture."
3. Our own hearts betray the fact that we’re actually not good people. We’re not truly happy and at peace.
4. "
We have these stabs of insight and awareness when the corner of the veil seems to be pulled back just a bit and we see, feel the awful truth."
5.  Despite this we insist on tenaciously holding on to this false narrative."
a) Because the truth seems to scary."
b) Because we don’t know what to do with it."
c) Because everyone else can’t be wrong can they?" d) Because, after all, a person has to get by somehow."
6. Paul writes about this in the first chapter of Romans:"
a) For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. (Romans 1:18-21, ESV)!
He writes about it again in our passage for today"
a) And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.!
5. So according to Scripture there is a perfect storm of forces working against us to keep us enslaved to this lie. What I call the infernal 3 ’S’es:"
a) Satan"

b) Sinful Self"
c) Society"

G. The Hope:"

1. What possible hope could there be against such a corrupt campaign?"
.    a)  Let’s read further in our passage"
.    b)  For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. ! (1) Talk about what “Jesus Christ as Lord” means"
(2) God means to rescue people who are enslaved by this axis of evil."
.    c)  For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.!
.    d)  “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” ...So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:31-36, ESV)!
.    e)  All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. (John 6:37, ESV)!
.    f)  for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:12-13, ESV)!
2. What is your response to this?"

a) If you are here today and you have always believed what we have called The Lie - if you have never experienced God shining in your heart to give you the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ - WHAT ABOUT TODAY?"
.    (1)  If today you are seeing the lie for what it is"
.    (2)  If you are seeing your sinfulness and poverty of spirit"
.    (3)  If today you are seeing Christ as wonderful and glorious and gracious"
.    (4)  Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. (2 Corinthians 6:1-2, ESV)!
b) Maybe for you the veil has already been lifted and God’s light has already shone into your heart - I hope that’s most of you here today - WHAT ABOUT YOU?"
.    (1)  It’s easy for you now, right? The spell has been broken and you are no longer affected by The Lie, right?"
.    (2)  No, of course not. The war has been decisively won for us, but the deadly battle still rages."
(a) Is Satan still laboring to bewitch you with his lies? "
.    i)  YES! "
.    ii)  Your adversary the Devil still prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour? "
.    iii)  His mission is still to steal, kill and destroy you."
(b) Is Satan’s kingdom of this world still repeating and reinforcing the lie in our daily lives - 24/7/365. YES!"
(c) Our own flesh has not been completely eradicated and still wages war against the Spirit within us."
(3) Remember: "
.    (a)  Jesus Christ is Lord"
.    (b)  The King has given his servants every tool they need to wage a winning war."
.    (c)  That is why we must orient our lives not according to the pattern of this world, but in a way that allows us to avail ourselves of all of the weapons that God has given us to fight for truth, faith, hope and love."
.                      i)  To let the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, dwell richly in you, by reading it, studying it, memorizing it, meditating upon it, singing it and praying it."
.                      ii)  To take full advantage of the family of fellow soldiers which is the church in practicing all of the ‘one- anothers’ together: encourage, exhort, sing to, bear with, pray for, correct, submit to, serve..."
(d) So that we can regularly hear and see and feel the Truth"
"For I know that the Lord is great,!
and that our Lord is above all gods.!
Whatever the Lord pleases, he does,!
in heaven and on earth,!
in the seas and all deeps. (Psalm 135:5-6, ESV)"
"
Whom have I in heaven but you?!
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.!
My flesh and my heart may fail,!
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (Psalm 73:25-26, ESV)"
"
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. (John 10:27-29, ESV)"
"
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:31-39, ESV)

Keep on Keeping On

Keep on Keeping On
2013-12-08

Act 14:8-15, 19-20

Now at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet. He was crippled from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul speaking. And Paul, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be made well,10 said in a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And he sprang up and began walking. 11 And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!” 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13 And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates and wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds. 14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying out, 15 “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men, of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them.
19 But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. 20 But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city, and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe.

Paul is on ministry rollercoaster...In Antioch, the whole city wanted “More Gospel!” then kicked him out. In Iconium, he was tolerated, then they wanted to kill him. Now in Lystra, he is hailed as god. Act 14:8-13
·      This lame man’s faith resulted in his salvation & healing.
·      Clear though that miracles can lead to wrong conclusions.  For example:
o   They believed Barnabas was Zeus (Jupiter), a 'father of gods” maybe due to appearance.
o   They believed Paul was Hermes (Mercury), a messenger of gods. Paul chief speaker.
·      The Motivation for pagan worship was so self-centered: This was Zeus & Hermes supposed last visit. The motivation was so that they wouldn't get wiped out.
Paul and Barnabus could have thought 'What an opportunity!'  Give them the gospel & they’ll respond because they think we’re gods even though we know we’re not gods.
·      Some preaching of today has similar guise & spirit.
o   Those Speakers desire to impress & the gospel takes 2nd place.  Ogilvie quote

We put the communicator on a pedestal and evade the communication. We have a seemingly limitless capacity to give the honor that belongs to Christ to the
people who seek to introduce us to Him.  Pastors, parents, leaders, friends, and
teachers who have brought us the good news are often made the source of our security. We elevate them to super sainthood and miss for ourselves the dynamic that has made them admirable. We make matinee idols out of Christian leaders.  The reason there are so many proud Christian celebrities today is that we have given the messenger more honor than the message.  Lloyd John Ogilvie

·      Used General Revelation in attempt to stop the worship of them. Act 14:14-18, Rom 1:20
o   God allowed them to follow their own ways, not as a concession to sinfulness, but as a gracious, patient, Creator- waiting for them to see Him in creation & repent.
·      Theory of evolution directly opposes General Revelation & thus the Gospel.
o   Without a Creator or moral lawgiver people fail to see their need for God & they cut themselves off from what creation was designed to do, which is lead them to God.
These people had expectations that were not fulfilled: Paul and Barnabus were not gods (the people thought maybe they are dangerous magicians), and were not bringing the material blessings they thought the gods could give them.
·      Realized the Gospel opposed their religion. They realize it is easier to get rid of Paul not their religion.
o   It displays a shallow response to miracles vs. a true repentance thru the Gospel
The people were persuaded by the Iconium/Antioch Jews (who traveled 100 miles) to stone Paul; they dragged him out of Lystra & left him for dead (did not even bury him). Act 14:19-20, 2 Cor 11:25 & 1:8-10
·      Nothing is said about Barnabas. Maybe he was not present when Paul was attacked.
o   The Word never states Paul died (just mostly dead) or that he was physically healed.
·      This was one of Paul’s lowest valleys but Jesus gave him courage & strength to get up, and despite incredible pain, he goes back to serving Christ.
o   The next day Paul and Barnabus went to Derbe, which is a 65-mile walk, it must have been excruciatingly painful.
God had more for Paul to do, so he didn’t die. The same is true for you.
·      We need to follow Paul’s example & ran through the finish line at end of our lives.
We can easily find ourselves slowing down our serving, extending a season of rest, or stopping altogether. Eph 2:10, 5:15-17, 1 Cor 9:24-27, 2 Tim 4:6-8
·      Maybe you were mistreated and unappreciated by Christians, maybe they failed too much, perhaps there are life changes such as kids or illness, sometimes we are just "too busy" with the things of this world, or maybe you feel as if you have done your share (esp. older Christians & those grew up in Christian families). Do you see the heart behind that?
o   What happens is the people and the church become annoying or bothersome and our heart pulls away.
·      Christianity and our faith becomes a theology or a concept to believe, not a relationship/friendship with Jesus Christ. Driscoll

“We get so consumed with our studies and our systematics, that we forget that Jesus is alive, and we’re supposed to have a relationship with him, and the Holy Spirit dwells in us, and we’re supposed to follow him. And so then Christianity goes from a relationship that we enjoy to a belief system we adhere to. And let me submit to you it’s both. Christianity is a belief system we adhere to, and it’s a relationship we enjoy, but it has to be both. And when it (Revelation 2:2-5) says that they (Ephesians) lack love, they were weak on the relational enjoyment of Jesus, His people, and lost people.”  Mark Driscoll

Jesus doesn’t come to condemn, guilt or threaten if your struggling to remain motivated to serve.
·      Instead He says, “I love you. You’re not at finish line yet, let’s keep going because there’s more people to reach, more truth to teach, more things to do.”
o   Your treasure isn’t here & your time to rest isn’t now.
o   Understand, as Paul did, that joyful service that comes at a personal cost is a sweet offering to a worthy Savior, King, & Friend.
o   We can only serve Him by the power & presence of God.
