Increasing Our Easter Gratitude

Increasing Our Easter Gratitude
2014-04-20

1 Corinthians 15:14-20,
14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

The level of gratitude and joy a person has corresponds to realization of the cost of gift.
·      There is a difference in value of re-gift vs. sacrificial gift.
o   Like driving 1500 vs 5 miles to visit on your family on Easter.  Time, money, effort, distance.
·      The level of gratitude and joy also relates to the perceived seriousness of the situation: If you are released from $50 speeding ticket vs. a murder conviction.
The level of joy/gratitude/love on Easter is in proportion to the sense of personal indebtedness to God. Luke 7:39-50
·      You have a No/low understanding of personal indebtedness to God if you view Easter as a “have to do” bi-annual visit to church/parents/others.
·      If you view your spiritual debt to be present but not significant. That would be a moderate understanding.
o   Simon was just as spiritually bankrupt as the woman, he just didn’t realize it.
·      You have a high understanding of personal indebtedness to God if you have the biblical view of yourself & the cost Jesus paid for salvation.
o   The cost to pay your incomprehensible sin debt was immeasurable.
§  Only those who realize the depth/cost of their sin truly appreciate & celebrate the complete forgiveness God offers.
Paul understood this truth & how the resurrection was just as crucial as  the crucifixion. 1 Tim 1:15-17, 1 Cor 15:17 & 20, Rom 10:9-10
·      It is a historical fact that the resurrection is the foundation to Christian faith & sets Christianty apart from the rest of world's religions.
    • Proof of resurrection is so complete that only willful unbelief asks for more.
      • You have an intellectual responsibility to examine the evidence.
Jesus did for us on the cross what we could never do for ourselves— purchased for Christians an acquittal, justification, and forgiveness.
·      The resurrection doesn't add anything to the condemnation-absorbing effect of the cross.
o   Christ’s death was utterly sufficient & needs no repetition/addition to remove all our condemnation. 1 Peter 3:18, Rom 4:24-5:1
§  If there was no resurrection, then Christ’s death would be that of just a martyr, victim of injustice, or a good ordinary man with no saving value…..not that of Savior/God in flesh
·      So, the resurrection was God’s proclamation: All Christians sin debt  is paid in full.
o   Easter validates Good Friday….loan paid in full
·      When Jesus Christ was raised it was as if God said “I accept  the substitutionary sacrifice/death & can forgive sins because all guilt/condemnation is removed.
Resurrection is the undeniable proof that Jesus is the Judge, Messiah, and Savior ….this has enormous consequences to all people.  1 Peter 2:9-11, Acts 17:30-31, 1 Cor 15:1-10, 17-20
·      The purpose of the tomb being opened was not to let Jesus out but to let others in!
o   For sinners who repent the resurrection promises peace/new relationship with God, power over sin, & hope in the present/future life.
·      If you rightly understand the immeasurable, precious cost that had to be paid for your incomprehensible sin debt….your level of joy/gratitude/love toward Jesus will increase exponentially on Easter & every day of both your earthly and eternal life.

A Demonic Pawn

                   A Demonic Pawn
2014-04-13

Acts 19:11-20

11 And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, 12 and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” 13 But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem. 14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.” 15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” 17 So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized; 19 and taking food, he was strengthened. For some days he was with the disciples at Damascus. 20 And immediately he proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is the Son of God.”
Paul begins his 3rd journey at Ephesus, which was the center for occult practices & demonic activity.
·      Satan/demons are not ‘omni’-anything
o   There are not fewer demons so there is no reason to believe there is less demonic activity today.
·      We in the High-tech West find it hard believe in demons: We can’t perceive it with our 5 senses.
o   Demons MAY influence and unusually cause a strong irrational fear, anger, hatred, bitterness, lust, greed, sometimes disease and/or sickness.  Acts 8:7, Lk. 13: 11, Mt 17:15, 18 & 4:24, Mk 9:17-18, 1 Cor. 12:10
§  Not all evil and sin is from Satan/demons, but some is.
Look at the Text: God’s has power/authority over demons to advance His kingdom. Acts 19:11-16
·      The seven sons of Sceva did not accepted as Messiah, but used His name to cast out demons.
o   In the New Testament, there was not a formula to casting out demons, it was always a matter of authority from God...knowing about Jesus is not the same as knowing him.
·      God does not approve of inappropriate and/or unauthorized associations with His name.
It backfires if people try to use or manipulate God. Acts 19:17-20, 16:17, Ex 7:22, Mt 7:22
·      To the pagans: Christ’s name now had divine power/authority & the Gospel and what Paul was saying was proven true.
·      The new Ephesian believers repented, turned from sin, & burned their occult books: they did not sell it or give it away…as to no infect others with evil.
o   Victory over a demonic attack usually is not an issue of casting out demons, but repenting & yielding to the Holy Spirit. Eph. 6:10-12, Gal 5:16-17; Col 3:3-5, Jam 4:7
o   Accept responsibility to obey Jesus Christ & not shift blame to demonic force.
§  To repent & make a clean break from sin is sometimes costly.
·      50,000 silver (1= 1 days pay)=192 yrs. of work
o   @ $9/hr. ($19,000/yr.) = 3.6 mil. today!
The fruit of repentance is freedom/blessing….Destroy evil books, gain sacred books.
·      1 Cor., John’s gospel & 3 epistles written in Ephesus
o   1 & 2 Timothy, was written to Timothy as a pastor in Ephesus
A Christian can NOT be demon possessed: speaks of ownership & no Christian is owned by a demon.
·      There are varying degrees of demonic attack/influence on Christians. Eph. 6:12, Rom 6:14, 1 Cor. 6:19-20, Eph. 4:27, 30-32, 2 Cor. 12:7-9
o   Persistent sin CAN give a foothold to demonic activity.
o   Usually the enemy is trying to keep a Christian from more effective ministry/growth.
The New Testament recognizes demonic activity, but the emphasis is not on influence of demons, but power of Gospel to triumph over works of Devil. 1 Jn. 3:8, Lk. 4:41, Heb. 2:14, Col 2:15, 1 Jn. 4:4, 5:4, Rev 12:11, Lk. 10:20,
·      The cross of Christ is the ultimate basis for victory and authority over demons.
o   Membership in God's family is the only position to engage in spiritual warfare
·      In prayer for self & others occasionally ask Jesus to rebuke demons. 2 Cor. 10:3-5, Lk. 9:1, Acts 8:7, 16:18, Eph. 6:10-18, 1 Pet 5:8-9, Jude 9
o   Sometimes one can GENTLY verbally rebuke demon in Jesus’ name or quote relevant scripture if there is a sense of demonic activity.
o    This does not have to be highly dramatic, rather briefly tell evil spirit to leave in Jesus’ name.
§  The main focus is not on the demon but the truths in the Word.
·      Whether a demon or sin, the Holy Spirit can make changes in your life.
o   Satan is a defeated foe & thru the Holy Spirit we have the power to overcome him and walk victoriously with hope & joy.

Not Just Repentance

Not Just Repentance
2014-04-06

Acts 19:1-7
English Standard Version (ESV)

19 And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John's baptism.” And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. There were about twelve men in all.

Sincere beliefs and feelings can’t take the place of Biblical truth and facts.
·      If 12 become nucleus of Ephesian church they must believe the Gospel.
o   For Paul, the way to determine that was to ask if they received the Holy Spirit.
Apart from the Holy Spirit, there is no salvation.  Acts 19:1-2, Mt 3:11, Jn 6:66, Lk 5:33, 7:18-20,
·      “disciple” means simply a learner of anybody….not necessarily Christ follower.
·      Not Christians, but John the Baptizers’ disciples….this was 30 years after his ministry ended.
o   The 12 knew about the Holy Spirit (John the baptizer proclaimed) but not that the Holy Spirit had been given or was being given. Jn 7:39, Mk 1:8; Lk 3:16; Jn 1:32
Rather than questioning their belief in Jesus they asked “Into what baptized?” Acts 19:3, 4:12
·      John the Baptists’ baptism was a sign of repentance, not a sign of faith or a new life in Jesus Christ.
o   They failed to recognize Jesus, the one whom John the Baptist proclaimed- the promised Messiah.
·     People must transfer faith from Christ to come to Lord Jesus who has come.
o   We not ONLY turn from sin (repentance) but turn to faith in Jesus Christ.  Acts 19:4-5,
Paul taught about Jesus not the Holy Spirit, because if people came to faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit would indwell permanently in fullness; ALL of who He is.
·      There is no gap between salvation & the gift of Holy Spirit….If you don't have Holy Spirit, you're not Christian.
o   Rom 8:9,16; 1 Cor 3:16, Eph 1:13 Jn 3:34
o   Nor does a person progressively receive the Holy Spirit: ie. part at salvation & later in fullness (2nd blessing)…in effect a person hasn't received the Holy Spirit at all.
o   It’s either all or nothing…Eph 5:18 Holy Spirit is getting more of us.
§  People without the Holy Spirit use a contradiction in terms like “Jesus is Savior but not Lord".
·      We do not exalt God when have wrong view of Him, Christ or Holy Spirit.
This is considered the last of four “Pentecosts” in Acts when Spirit came at various times and ways.
·      Common in all: immediate, bold, effective witness for Jesus & God’s greatness.
o   Sometimes salvation is accompanied by GIFT of tongues.
§  No tongues: 3000 believers @ Pentecost (2:41); Ethiopian official (8:38-39); Lydia & her household; Phil jailer/family.
·      Tongues and prophecy are not the emphasis of this or other “Pentecosts” nor central theme of Acts.
o   Acts not primarily doctrinal manual on Holy Spirit (Epistles accomplish that) but a transitional history book describes spread/inclusiveness of gospel
Tongues and prophesy are still gifts the Holy Spirit sovereignly gives to SOME believers to build up body. include 5 gifts sections of scripture on overhead…..1 Cor 12:7, 11, 13, 27-13:1
·      Scripture no delineation of past, unavailable & present available.
o   But tongues and prophecy can’t be proof of salvation….not every Christian has those gifts.
·      The enemy uses the misuse of “sign gifts” to cause confusion/division.
o   any spiritual gift hurts the body if love is not foundation for exercising it.
·      Main cause of division is not Tongues and Prophecy but PRIDE on both sides... “Gifts” discussion.
A healthy church should exercise great diversity of gifts that should not lead to fragmentation/division but to greater unity.  i.e. LEFC
·      Here tongues and prophecy is for unity…God wanted to connect everybody into one Church.
o   Also, to show Paul was God's messenger & equal with other apostles.
·      When you believed you received the gift of the Holy Spirit & He gave you at least one spiritual gift.
o   Are you using your gifts in love to strengthen body & glorify God?
